marta's entry for sephora.com/stila contest
A Couple of years ago my boyfriend whisked me off 2 a sexy, romantic weekend in Miami. Not being a native New Yorker like he is, I was really excited 2 go there! I was working for a top modeling agency, so I helped glitz up our plans by contributing some of my great model hook ups & had gone all out buying new swimwear, eyewear & of course, bright colored make up 2 compliment a fashionable tropical weekend... Our plane arrived mid-afternoon.But, when we got 2 the Hotel the reservation clerk informed me that there was a mistake w/the reservation that I had just had my assistant re-confirmed 4 me! The Stern woman told me we would not be getting a poolside room after all. I stood there tired & disappointed, but so in love...I looked @ her sadly w/o making a fuss. She kept typing away@her computer w/o looking @ or answering me. Until she said. "I have made you a little upgrade", w/an ever so slight smile. I asked if the room had a balcony, and She answered "No, but I think it will be 2 your satisfaction." I smiled @ my BF sadly...We went up stairs & discovered she had given us the entire top of the hotel! It was insane! I felt like Demi Moore rolling around in money in "Indecent Proposal"! We were squealing! Indeed, the hotel's deco tower had no baloney; just sky lights, stainless kitchen, a private theater, designer decor, sunken tubs, rain showers...3 floors of luxury towering over beautiful Miami Beach! Once everything sank in, we threw on our new Prada swimsuits & sauntered down 2 their famous pool 2 catch the end of the day sun... My love who is olive completed asked me 4 sunscreen? Perplexed, I searched through my humungous tote & found none. I smiled & said "Honey, it's already 5pm I will buy some later." He warned me that the sun was still strong, & I gave the usual stupid remarks that someone does who is not wearing sunscreen like: "Yes, I am fair, but I tan, afterall I am part Cherokee". He wisely sat under the umbrella. We ordered Pina Coladas & I swear, we were only in the very late afternoon sun a little more than 1 hour or 2, tops! When I retuned 2 our room after dinner I was cooked! High thread count sheets never felt so good! In the morning I quieting slid out of bed 2 pretty myself before he awakened. When I looked in the mirror to my ABSOLUTE HORROR, I discover that not only was my face red but the upper right hand side of my forehead Had begun 2 BLISTER! I had never in years of living on the beach BLISTERED! I recalled the sun receded in that direction...I got out my Sephora tool kit & started working@ covering it, Ouch! I hid Bride of Frankenstein. By Brunch time we were sitting in an outdoor cafe & my forehead was throbbing...I combed my hair sort of over 2 one side...I excused myself 2 go 2 the ladies room thinking i would reapply some make up 2 cover my "boo-boo" & Oh MY GOD! the whole right side of my forehead was now completely a blaze in sun blisters! IT LOOKED LIKE A MONSTER! IT WAS DISGUSTING! I started 2 panic! "Crap, I didn't have my inhaler! breath, breath..." I got dizzy & had to sit down & put my head between my knees (being careful of my forehead, mind you!) .Oh, gosh, he would most def, break up with me! This was so gross! I stumbled out of the ladies room leaving my BF still @ the table & ran in my new Dolces 2 the nearest store& bought neosporine & get this...the only bandaids they had were BARBIE BANDAIDS! I creamed my wound, &stuck 2 BARBIES over it & tried 2 act like nothing was wrong as I returned 2 the table after being missing 4 eternity. I, of course, smiled sheepishly & said that I had gone 2 buy sunscreen; ) My now hubby, was the sweetest & remarked that I was making quite a fashion statement as I ran around for the next almost 2 weeks wearing pink BARBIE BANDAIDS...I knew after that he was my man ; ) 2 add insult 2 injury, i had 2 go to several red carpet events 4 work when I got back 2 NYC the next week & sure enough the cameras were not 2 miss the lady w/the BARBIE BANDAID on her forehead! Cute as it may sound, I am using sun screen from now on & my dematologist says I am very lucky it didn't scar!
